Astral Projection

Definition - What does Astral Projection mean?

Astral projection is the process of separating one's consciousness (subtle body) from the physical body. Put another way, it is when the astral body leaves the physical body and travels to the astral plane. Astral projection is also known as an out-of-body experience, or OBE.

A concept in many Eastern cultures, astral projection is found in yoga, Hinduism and Buddhism, among others. Astral projection can happen spontaneously — like in near-death experiences — or it can be experienced through conscious effort.

Yogapedia explains Astral Projection

In some yogic traditions, astral projection is one of the spiritual or supernatural powers known as siddhis that yogis can achieve through such practices as meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises), mantra chanting and asana.

The 20th-century yogi and guru, Paramahansa Yogananda, spoke of traveling to the astral world through meditation where anything is achievable. Yogi, mystic and author, Sadhguru, also speaks of astral travel, but warns against it for what he calls entertainment purposes.

In some Buddhist traditions, those who reach the fourth jhana (meditative state) may achieve certain supernatural powers, including astral projection.

A modern practice called Dream Yoga promotes astral projection through lucid dreaming. It is designed to awaken consciousness in the inner worlds.
