Attunement

Definition - What does Attunement mean?

Attunement refers to the process of creating a harmonious energetic connection with the universe, arising from the adjustments of a Reiki Master. Reiki is a Japanese term, meaning 'universal life energy,' similar to the concepts of Prana in yoga and Chi in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The term is also used to refer to a healing therapy developed by Mikao Usui in 1922.

Reiki is passed from Master to student via attunements, in which the student is prepared to become a vessel for universal energy. Until a student has received attunements from a Reiki Master, they are unable to truly move Reiki energy for themselves or others.

Yogapedia explains Attunement

Attunements are adjustments made to a student's energy body by an experienced Reiki Master. This may cause tingling sensations or a feeling of lightness in the physical body. Attunement provides a direct connection between the student and the universe, allowing them, in turn, to provide Reiki energy healing for others.

Attunements work by clearing energetic pathways in the body as a means of allowing Reiki energy to flow freely, particularly to areas in need of healing. Since attunement allows the student to connect with the source of universal energy, it can be a powerful spiritual experience.

Benefits of attunement include:

  • Enhanced channeling pathways
  • Heightened intuitive awareness
  • Improved psychic sensitivity
  • Spiritual transformation

Prior to an attunement, the student is expected to deepen their own spiritual practice and take part in a three-day dietary cleanse. Meat, dairy, fish, caffeine, sugar, alcohol, tobacco should be eliminated or limited in the days leading up to an attunement, and the student should avoid outside stimulation, such as TV or internet. In order to receive maximum benefit, this cleanse should be continued for up to 21 days after the attunement.
