Definition - What does Chakra Meditation mean?

Chakra meditation is a form of meditation intended to activate, open and balance the seven chakras. It is recommended for bringing greater awareness of the spiritual and energetic body, and may be incorporated into a broader energy healing practice.

Often, chakra meditation refers to one specific meditation practice, which individually and in sequence takes each of the chakras as its focus. However, some yogis also advocate the use of specific meditations to support each of the different chakras. Either way, chakra meditation is thought to be a powerful and uplifting practice.

Yogapedia explains Chakra Meditation

Chakra meditation can be practiced to improve general well-being or to address specific issues with one or more chakras that are thought to be blocked or out of alignment.

The process for one typical chakra meditation is:

  1. Sit comfortably with the spine upright. Close the eyes and focus on the breath until ready to begin.
  2. Bring awareness to each chakra in turn, starting with muladhara, the root chakra, and working up to sahasrara, the crown chakra. For each, visualize energy flowing into and through that chakra. Use the color each chakra is associated with to enhance the visualization. Stay focused on each chakra for several minutes before moving on to the next.
  3. Once the crown chakra is reached, visualize all the chakras together, with energy flowing through the whole body. Stay for several minutes before closing the meditation.

It is recommended that chakra meditation is practiced regularly for 15 to 30 minutes each time for maximum benefit. Because of the knowledge of the chakras required in order to focus on each of the chakras in turn, many practitioners will practice chakra meditation initially guided by a teacher or recording.
