Desavadhi

Definition - What does Desavadhi mean?

Desavadhi is a Sanskrit term referring to the state of a conditioned mind that has a limited perception of reality, with desa translating as "space" and vadhi as "limited ability of perceiving." The concept of desa when combined with vadhi, refers to a yogi's inability to perceive things with more intuition or insight beyond what the physical senses allow. This limited ability to perceive space, is the conditioned reaction to birth and life in the material world.

The work of yoga is to break this conditioning and to free the mind to be able to perceive and experience life beyond the physical and material world.

Yogapedia explains Desavadhi

Novice or beginning yogis may be considered to have a desavadhi mind; however, they are not even aware of this. It is only through the practice of yoga and meditation that they can begin to deepen their insight and realization to their true nature, beyond their physical senses.

The first step toward relinquishing desavadhi, is feeling that there is more to life and the world than is currently being experienced. Yogis who experience desavadhi will begin their yoga practice with resistance as they have to let go of control of their physical senses to allow for a realization and experience of not only the true nature of things, but also of the self.
