Definition - What does Extended Revolved Crescent Lunge mean?

Extended revolved crescent lunge is an intermediate standing posture that is a variation on crescent lunge.

In this pose, the right leg steps forward with the knee bent to a right angle, and the left leg extends straight back in a lunge position. The torso twists over the right leg and the left arm reaches down while the right arm reaches straight up. The gaze is up toward the right hand. After holding the posture, it is repeated on the opposite side.

Extended revolved crescent lunge is known in Sanskrit as utthita parivrtta anjaneyasana.

Yogapedia explains Extended Revolved Crescent Lunge

Extended revolved crescent lunge stretches and strengthens the whole body. It requires strength, balance and flexibility, and is usually considered more challenging to hold than crescent lunge.Additional, specific benefits of extended revolved crescent lunge include:

  • Lengthens the spine
  • Opens the rib cage
  • Stretches the hip flexor and calf of the back leg
  • Tones the muscles of the legs and hips
  • Stimulates the internal organs
  • Strengthens the back muscles

Extended revolved crescent lunge can be modified by keeping the gaze down to avoid straining the neck and lowering the back knee to the ground for extra stability. A block can also be used under the hand to make the posture more accessible.
