Haldi

Definition - What does Haldi mean?

Haldi is a sacred spice used on the Indian subcontinent in cooking, in medicine and in rituals; most notably the haldi ceremony usually held a day or two before a wedding. In different regions of India, it is known by different names and is best known in the Western world as turmeric.

A yellow powdery spice, haldi is a staple in Indian cooking, often added to curries. It is an ingredient in golden milk (haldi ka doodh in Hindi), a warm beverage that's also used as a healing elixir.

Yogapedia explains Haldi

In the traditional Indian medicine system of Ayurveda, haldi is used as a treatment for a variety of conditions and is valued for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and bacteria-fighting properties. It may be consumed or applied externally as a paste.

As part of the Hindu wedding celebration, the haldi ceremony is believed to remove evil and is a way to offer blessings to the couple. A paste made of the spice is applied to the bride's and groom's bodies at their separate homes as a purification rite. The couple then stays at their respective homes until the wedding.
