Definition - What does Krounchasana mean?

Krounchasana is a unique derivation of a forward bend that requires the leg to be brought toward the face. The name is derived from the Sanskrit krouncha, meaning "heron," and asana, meaning "pose."

To enter this pose, the practitioner begins in dandasana (staff pose). One knee is folded so the heel rests by the hip as in virasana (hero pose). With the knees together, the left leg is lifted toward the torso and straightened as much as possible. This is then repeated on the opposite side.

Krounchasana is also referred to as heron pose in English.

Yogapedia explains Krounchasana

Krounchasana is an excellent pose for stimulating the abdominal organs. It stretches and strengthens the legs and abdomen as well.

The mental health benefits of krounchasana include:

  • Cures mild depression
  • Boosts willpower
  • Helps to stay grounded

Krounchasana stimulates the manipura (solar plexus) chakra. Energizing this chakra imparts power, confidence, and self-esteem. It is also associated with perceptions about freedom and the true self.
