Lakshmipuram Institute

Definition - What does Lakshmipuram Institute mean?

Lakshmipuram Institute is a term sometimes used to refer to the original Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute that was set up in 1948 by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the founder of ashtanga yoga. It was located in Lakshmipuram in the tiny, two room home of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his wife.

Pattabhi Jois's intention was to establish a place where he could rigorously study, investigate and explore the curative aspects of yoga. He was particularly interested in how ashtanga yoga could benefit those with medical issues.

Yogapedia explains Lakshmipuram Institute

Despite the humble setting of the original Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute, Pattabhi Jois quickly established credibility as a yoga guru, and many local officials practiced with him in Lakshmipuram. Local doctors reportedly also began to refer patients to Pattabhi Jois to help with treating conditions ranging from blood pressure issues to diabetes.

In 1964, Pattabhi Jois extended his house to accommodate a yoga hall for twelve students and room for resting. Europeans and, later, Americans began to travel to Mysore to study with Pattabhi Jois.

In 1998, Pattabhi Jois moved his residence out of the venue in Lakshmipuram, but continued to teach from there, until his following outgrew the small space and he opened a new shala in 2002. It continues to be a popular place to practice ashtanga yoga, and many ashtangis flock to study with Pattabhi Jois’ daugher and grandson.
