Moon Bridge Pose

Definition - What does Moon Bridge Pose mean?

Moon Bridge is a posture found in AcroYoga, a style in which traditional Hatha or Vinyasa Flow are combined with acrobatics. A key feature of AcroYoga is that it is practiced by two people together. Moon Bridge is an intermediate level L-base pose, in which one person provides the base (in contact with the ground) and the other person is a flyer (lifted off the ground by the base).

Yogapedia explains Moon Bridge Pose

To practice Moon Bridge, follow these steps with a partner:

  1. Begin by transitioning through Back Flying (L-base supporting flyer's sacrum, flyer parallel to the ground and facing the ceiling).
  2. Flyer: take hold of the front of base's ankles and bend elbows to bring lower arms in contact with base's shins. Base: Slowly bend knees towards chest.
  3. Flyer: tuck chin into chest and lift legs, as though coming into a shoulder stand, with shoulders supported by the back of base's thighs. Keep weight of legs shifted towards base's head, roughly a 45-degree angle. Base: Support flyer's buttocks with soles of feet and bend elbows 90-degrees to take hold of flyer's upper arms.

Moon Bridge may be held for as long as both practitioners can remain stable. As this pose requires core strength from the flyer and lower body strength from the base, it is important to warm up the body prior to practicing Moon Bridge.
