Pachaka Pitta

Definition - What does Pachaka Pitta mean?

According to Ayurveda, Pachaka Pitta is a sub-category of Pitta dosha, responsible for the digestion of food into nutrients and waste. Sub-doshas are responsible for overseeing specific actions, organs or emotions, and relative imbalance in these energetic sub-categories tends to be the root cause of illness, disease and ill-health.

Pachaka Pitta resides primarily in the small intestine and stomach, but it can also be found in all parts of the alimentary canal. It is considered to be one of the most important sub-doshas, since healthy digestion is seen as the root cause of good health in Ayurveda.

Yogapedia explains Pachaka Pitta

Pachaka Pitta is the fifth sub-dosha of Pitta, governing metabolism and the assimilation of nutrients. Digestive issues, such as constipation, bloating and hyperacidity, are a sign that Pachaka Pitta is out of balance. Imbalance may also cause a lack of appetite.

Specific herbs and correct food choices are important in correcting Pachaka Pitta. Since these will depend on an individual's Prakriti and Vikriti, it is best to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for support in treating digestive imbalance.
