Partner Yoga

Definition - What does Partner Yoga mean?

Partner yoga is a style of asana practice in which two people support each other in poses in a way that enhances the postures and builds trust and communication. Working with a partner provides balance in a pose while establishing and maintaining proper body alignment. It also allows each yogi to experience the pose in a different way.

Partner yoga helps build relationships as the yogis share the pose, movements and breath. Each must step outside him/herself to connect with the other and work together.

Yogapedia explains Partner Yoga

Partner yoga can deepen a pose, such as boat pose, in which the soles of the partners' feet touch, and they grasp hands. Typically a strong core workout, boat pose also becomes a hamstring stretch in Partner yoga.

Other simple partner poses include:

  • Double downward-facing dog – One yogi practices down dog while the second yogi practices with his/her feet on the lower back of the first and hands on the ground.
  • Partner fold – The partner yogis face each other in seated wide angle with feet touching, and then grasp eachother's arms. One partner folds forward while the other reclines.
  • Double standing forward bend – The yogis stand back-to-back with buttocks touching and each folds forward, then reaches back to grab the arms or shoulders of the other partner.
