Definition - What does Swami Satchidananda mean?

Swami Satchidananda (1914-2002) was the founder of Integral yoga, but is perhaps best known as the Woodstock guru who had a celebrity following. Born C.K. Ramaswamy Gounder in India, he was also known as Satchidananda Saraswati.

A disciple of Sivananda Saraswati, Swami Satchidananda is credited with starting one of the first yoga teacher certification programs and establishing the first yoga magazine. He also developed a yoga program in prisons and drug rehabilitation centers. The swami's translation of "The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali" and commentary became the best-selling edition. He also wrote an English translation of the Bhagavad Gita titled, "The Living Gita."

Swami Satchidananda's Integral yoga takes an interfaith approach in order to promote harmony, and melds aspects of many types of yoga. He encouraged yogis to choose the elements of various yoga disciplines that helped them find their own path.

On August 15, 1969, Swami Satchidananda opened the legendary Woodstock Music & Art Fair, ensuring his place in pop culture. His disciples included psychedelic artist, Peter Max; singer-song writer, Carole King; actress, Mia Farrow; former Beatle, George Harrison; and actor, Jeff Goldblum.
