Definition - What does Virabhadrasana B mean?

Virabhadrasana B is a standing asana that requires focus, strength and stability. It is named after Virabhadra, an incarnation of Shiva and a powerful warrior in Hindu mythology.

In this asana, the legs are in a lunge pose with the arms stretched out in opposite directions and parallel to the ground. The heel of the front foot should be in line with the heel of the back foot. The back foot should be at about a 90 degree angle. Unlike the forward-facing hips of Virabhadrasana A, the hips in Virabhadrasana B are aligned with each other, facing sideways with the rest of the torso. The front knee sits at a 90 degree angle and the head rotates toward the bent leg so the eyes gaze just over the front arm.

Virabhadrasana B may also be referred to as warrior two pose in English.

Yogapedia explains Virabhadrasana B

As the second of three poses in the Virabhadrasana series, Virabhadrasana B represents the warrior sighting his enemy and preparing for battle. Along with its companion poses, this asana is part of the primary series of Ashtanga yoga and a fundamental pose in other styles of yoga.

When used in a spiritual practice, this asana is believed to stimulate the muladhara (root) and svadisthana (spleen or sacral) chakras. By activating the muladhara chakra, this asana is believed to ground the individual, providing the inner stability necessary for personal growth. Energizing the svadisthana chakra is thought to promote self-acceptance, focus and productivity.

In addition to its physical benefits, Virabhadrasana B increases:

  • Concentration
  • Inner strength
  • A more focused and powerful energy
  • One's ability to better face life's daily challenges
