Yoga Glove

Definition - What does Yoga Glove mean?

Yoga gloves are a prop used by some yoga practitioners to protect their hands and stop them slipping. Some also prefer to wear yoga gloves for hygiene reasons, especially if they are borrowing a mat from a yoga studio.

Yoga gloves are usually made of lightweight fibres, such as cotton or lycra, and often have dotted coverings to provide extra grip. They may cover the whole hand or just the palm, leaving the fingers open.

Yogapedia explains Yoga Glove

Yoga gloves are becoming more commonly used because they are reported to have a range of benefits. These include:

  • Providing extra traction between hands and the mat or ground, especially if the hands are sweaty.

  • Allowing yoga practice to feel more comfortable when practicing without a mat.

  • Supporting the wrists through ergonomic designs, and reminders to distribute the weight evenly.

  • Providing extra warmth when practicing in cold spaces.

For some, yoga gloves are especially useful for travel, as they are more portable than a yoga mat.

However, some believe yoga gloves to be an unnecessary addition to a yoga practice, as they have the potential to become bunched up, and also stop the hands from connecting directly with the ground.

Yoga socks in similar styles are also available, and offer comparable benefits to yoga gloves.
