Yoga School
Definition - What does Yoga School mean?
A yoga school provides training and certification for yoga teachers. The school may also serve as a yoga studio that offers classes and instruction for yoga practitioners. The term may also be used to refer to a specific yogic discipline or tradition, such as Hatha, Ashtanga or Bikram.
Several organizations set or recognize standards for yoga schools that train teachers, including the Yoga Alliance and the International Yoga Federation. There is, however, no overall industry standard for curriculum requirements or certification.

A yoga school's training is shaped by the type of yoga being taught. But, regardless of type, the organizations that certify these teachers will set guidelines that apply across many yoga disciplines. For example, the Yoga Alliance provides “registered yoga school” designations based on the number of hours that the school requires for completion of its teacher training. The minimum number of training hours is 200, with a designation of RYS 200. Those hours are broken down as follows, with some electives to fill out the remaining time:
- Techniques, training and practice (100 hours)
- Teaching methodology (25 hours)
- Anatomy and physiology (20 hours)
- Yoga philosophy, lifestyle and ethics for yoga teachers (30 hours)
- Practicum (10 hours)
A minimum of 65 of those 200 hours must be completed with the lead trainer. The Yoga Alliance also provides specialty designations for registered prenatal yoga schools and registered children's yoga schools.
